Boy's Hospital Gown Design Is Finalist In National Contest

Six-year-old Jack was inspired to enter the contest by his sister, Everly, who is seven months old and has a congenital heart defect.

CRYSTAL LAKE, IL –Six-year-old Jack Backe from Crystal Lake wants your vote. He has designed a special hospital gown that he hopes his infant sister, Everly, as well as sick children across the U.S., could soon wear. Everly was born with a congenital heart defect that affects only 1 in 100,000 babies and was Jack's inspiration to sign up for a contest sponsored by Starlight Children's Foundation – an organization that creates colorful and fun hospital gowns for children.

Starlight Children’s Foundation has selected Jack's design as one of three finalists in its contest. If Jack's design wins, his design will be featured on a new gown. Starlight will donate 30,000 of those gowns to hospitalized kids all across U.S.

When asked about the clothes Everly has to wear in the hospital, Jack responded: "I hate 'em." Jack's hospital gown is complete with lots of color, hearts and tons of glitter.

Jack is hoping Everly will be able to wear his gown the next time she has to undergo surgery. The seven-month-old will need to have three open heart surgeries before her first birthday, according to ABC 7.

"Every time she grows, we're going to have to open her up again and do it," Lauren Backe, Jack and Everly's mother, told ABC 7.
