Cary Man Was Driving During Crash That Killed 95-Year-Old Man: Police

A 95-year-old man died after his disabled car was hit on Deer Park on Tuesday afternoon.

DEER PARK, IL — A 30-year-old Cary man was driving a car involved in a fatal collision in Deer Park this past week.

The crash happened at about 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday at the intersection of Lake Cook and Quentin roads. When Lake County Sherif's Office deputies arrived at the scene, they found a man, who has been identified as Richard A. Krzysztofiak, dead in the roadway, along with two heavily damaged vehicles.

A preliminary investigation revealed a 2006 Honda Accord, driven by Krzysztofiak, broke down and became disabled in a westbound lane of Lake Cook Road, just east of Quentin Road.

While under his car, a 2024 Honda HR-V, driven by the 30-year-old Cary man, struck the Honda Accord from behind, police said. The impact caused serious injuries to the man under his car, and he was later pronounced dead at the scene.

"We believe the man was under his car to see if he was able to get it running again," Lake County Sheriff's Office deputy chief Christopher Covelli said.

The driver of the Honda HR-V, along with a passenger, a 30-year-old Arlington Heights woman, were taken to an area hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

No citations or charges have been filed against the Cary driver, Covelli said.

"No charges at this point. We will know more when we have his toxicology back and some other records. Additionally, we’ll be looking at working to determine a speed," he told Patch on Thursday.

Police said a passenger in the Honda Accord, a 77-year-old Barrington woman, was also taken to an area hospital for treatment of injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

Police said the Honda Accord was in the center lane, between the left turn lane and outside-through lane. According to witnesses, the driver of the Honda Accord exited his vehicle and began looking underneath the vehicle, under the engine area.

A school bus, only occupied by the driver, that was waiting to turn left onto southbound Quentin Road from westbound Lake Cook Road, was sideswiped during the crash. The driver of the school bus was uninjured.

Police said the Lake County Coroner's Office responded to the scene and an autopsy is being scheduled. The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff's Office Technical Crash Investigations Team.
