Cary Swimmers Win FVC Title

Hamann's four victories lead Trojans to Fox Valley Conference crown

Last season as a freshman, Cary-Grove’s Michael Hamann qualified for two events at the state meet including the 100 yard backstroke and 200 IM.

On Saturday in the Fox Valley Conference Meet at Woodstock North, Hamann began another postseason assault as the sophomore won or was a part of four victories as Cary-Grove won the event with 361 points.

Hamann started the day anchoring the 200 yard medley relay with Jon Curtis, Ryan Hamilton and Conor Cornelius that broke the conference record. Hamann then proceeded to swim in the next event, the 200 yard freestyle. Hamann broke the pool record with a time of 1:46.54, breaking the record by just under a second.

After a break, Hamann added a victory in the 100 yard backstroke, breaking the conference record by over a second in a time of 53.47 and finished off the day helping Cary to a commanding win in the 400 freestyle relay with Curtis, Cornelius and Andrew Brierton with another conference record time of 3:19.20, just below state qualifying standards.

Hamann was named co-MVP of the meet along with McHenry’s Kyle Braun. Cary, who is part of a co-op with Crystal Lake South, Crystal Lake Central and Prairie Ridge, also got strong performances from the rest of their swimmers with many second-place finishes allowing Cary to win the meet including Conor Cornelius in the 200 IM, who battled Jacobs/Dundee-Crown’s John Jost to the final yard before falling just short.
