Community Center Pool Preparing For Phase 4 Reopening

At the June 11 Park Board of Commissioners meeting the Park Board directed staff to begin preparations for the Community Center pool to open this summer following recommendations and guidelines from the Restore Illinois Five Phase Plan, Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH).

Under the Restore Illinois Plan, certain activities are allowed to resume in Phase 3 with Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) approved safety guidance in place. IDPH has issued swimming facility guidelines which outline the type of facilities and specific activities that may take place during Phase 3. Park District staff have been reviewing this information to determine what activities may be offered in a safe, efficient, and effective manner. Allowed Phase 3 uses include lap swim, diving, and swim lessons all occurring with social distancing and gathering size limitations. Public open swim is not included in Phase 3.
Park District staff is preparing the pool in anticipation of our region entering Phase 4 and if the guidelines for that phase, although not currently available, allow for public open swim. Options for accommodating this type of use will also be considered. Information regarding pool passes, daily fees, swim/diving lesson registration, and refunds will be made available in the coming weeks. An opening date of the pool is forthcoming but will not occur prior to mid-July.

The status of the Kaper Park splashpad opening this summer is still to be determined. Staff is awaiting further guidance from IDPH on when splashpads can open to the public.
