Crystal Lake Man Charged With Attempted Murder In Shooting

The 22-year-old Crystal Lake man is accused of shooting another man during a drug deal gone bad.

KANE COUNTY, IL — A Crystal Lake man was charged with attempted murder after police said he shot a 22-year-old man during a drug deal gone bad earlier this week. The shooting occurred around 6 p.m. Monday at a home on Powers Road in unincorporated Rutland Township, authorities said Thursday.

Kyle Campbell, also 22, of the 100 block of Surrey Lane in Crystal Lake, was charged with four class X felonies: attempted murder, attempted robbery with a firearm, and two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm.

According to a news release from the Kane County Sheriff's Office, the unnamed 22-year-old and another person went to the home to buy marijuana. Campbell took the cash but refused to hand over the marijuana, which was valued at less than $200, telling the buyers to leave, police said.

Campbell and the man then got into a struggle, and man was shot twice in the lower extremities, authorities said. He was taken to a Huntley-area hospital for treatment of the gunshot wounds.

Authorities issued a warrant for Campbell's arrest, and the sheriff's office and U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Region Task Force took him into custody around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday near Interstate 90 and Randall Road in Elgin.
