Crystal Lake Man in Critical Condition after Car Crash

A 21-year-old Crystal Lake man was critically injured in a car accident in Long Grove early this morning.

A 21-year-old Crystal Lake man is in critical condition after a car accident in Long Grove early this morning, the Lake County Sheriff's office announced today.

At approximately 1:25 a.m., Lake County Sheriff's Deputies received a call regarding a traffic crash with injuries at Lake Cook Road and Hicks Road.

Deputies discovered a 2013 Volkswagen Golf that collided with a tractor trailer semi-truck. The Vokswagen had extensive damage and was lodged underneath the trailer portion of the semi-truck.

The driver of the semi-truck, a 33 year-old man from Fargo, North Dakota, was traveling westbound on Lake Cook Road. He stopped at a red light on Hicks Road and when the light turned green, he began accelerating. The Volkswagen then struck the rear of the truck, which was also traveling westbound, the Sheriff's office said.

The man driving the Volkswagen was extricated by Long Grove Fire Protection District and other local fire departments. He was then brought to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge by ambulance with critical injuries. The driver of the semi-truck was uninjured.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit are investigating the crash to determine if distraction, speed, drugs, alcohol, or other components played a factor in the crash.
