Crystal Lake OKs Property Tax Levy Hike

The city council approved a 3.84 percent increase in the city's property tax levy over last year.

CRYSTAL LAKE, IL — Crystal Lake Mayor Aaron Shepley attributes a 2.04 percent decreases in the city's tax rate to growth in the city, the Northwest Herald reports. The tax rate saw a decrease but the property tax levy increased by 3.86 percent over last year.

The Crystal Lake City Council approved the property tax levy of $17.7 million at a meeting last week, according to the Northwest Herald. The Northwest Herald reports:

The city maintained a zero levy for general operations, including city administration, police, community development and public works. These will continue to be supported primarily through sales and income tax revenues, according to city staff. Crystal Lake has not levied a property tax for general operations since 1997. Because of this, although there is an increase in the levy, the tax rate is expected to have a decrease of 2.04%, which city officials said will mitigate the effect of the tax levy.
