Driver Critically Injured in Minibike Collision Near Cary

Authorities believe alcohol was a factor in the one-vehicle crash Sunday evening.

A 49-year-old man was critically injured Sunday evening when he crashed his minibike near Cary, police said.

The collision occurred when the driver was headed west on Fox River Road near Hickory Nut Grove Road in unincorporated Cary at about 6:50 p.m. Witnesses told police the driver took one of his hands off the handlebars and lost control of the minibike, according to a Lake County Sheriff’s Office press release. He was ejected from the vehicle and struck his head on the pavement.

The 49-year-old Cary man was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and was flown by Flight for Life helicopter to Condell Hospital in critical condition, police said.

A preliminary investigation revealed alcohol appeared to play a factor in the crash, according to the news release.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
