Crystal Lake Boy’s Death Remains Under Investigation Months Later

CRYSTAL LAKE, IL — The death of an 8-year-old Crystal Lake boy remains under investigation nearly three months after he was found unresponsive in his home, with police and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services providing few details about the case, according to media reports.

Crystal Lake police and fire personnel responded around 9:50 a.m. June 6 to a home in the 500 block of McHenry Avenue for a report of an unconscious person. The boy was found unresponsive and not breathing and was transported to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy was performed, but the McHenry County Coroner’s Office said there were no findings that immediately established a cause of death, and toxicology testing was pending, according to the Lake & McHenry County Scanner.

A heavily redacted Crystal Lake police report obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request classified the case as a death under “suspicious circumstances,” according to media reports.

Police reports indicate investigators photographed and videotaped the home, collected potential evidence and turned the scene over to detectives with the Criminal Investigations Unit. Investigators also obtained grand jury subpoenas, interviewed school staff and conducted a neighborhood canvass.

The coroner’s office has been working with Crystal Lake police and Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital on the investigation. DCFS also confirmed it was involved in the case and said the investigation remained pending, but the agency declined to provide additional details because it was active.

The boy’s identity has not been publicly released.
