Driver Injured After Colliding With Horse

A Marengo woman was taken by helicopter to the hospital following the Wednesday crash. She was in stable condition Thursday.

A 52-year-old Marengo woman who was taken by helicopter to the hospital Wednesday after crashing into a horse in rural McHenry County is now listed in stable condition, police said early Thursday. 

Lollie Popp-Steinke was driving east in the 8000 block of Route 20 east of Coral Road in unincorporated Coral Township at 6:13 p.m. when her 2002 Honda CR-V struck one of two horses that had gotten loose from a local farm, according to a McHenry County Sheriff’s Office press release.

She was taken by Flight for Life helicopter to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Rockford where she was listed in stable condition, police said.

A 52-year-old woman was evacuated by helicopter from the scene of a crash on Wednesday evening after her vehicle collided with a horse in unincorporated Coral Township. Popp-Steinke had been wearing her seatbelt, her front airbag had deployed, and neither drugs nor alcohol are suspected as having played a role in the crash.

The owner of the horse arranged for the horse to be euthanized at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Investigations Unit. Members of Marengo Fire Protection District, Union Fire Protection District, and Illinois Department of Transportation also responded to the scene.
