Drug Dealer Gets 8 Years In Heroin Overdose Death: Prosecutors

Shawn Brand has been sentenced for delivering heroin to a 29-year-old Wonder Lake man prior to him overdosing in July 2017, prosecutors said

MCHENRY COUNTY, IL -- A 35-year-old Wonder Lake man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for providing the drugs that lead to the overdose death of Jeremy Caccamo, prosecutors said last week. Shawn Brand admitted to authorities he delivered two bags of heroin to Caccamo on July 4, 2017, for $20 and some hypodermic needles, according to a news release from the McHenry County State's Attorney's Office. Brand was convicted on a charge of of delivery of a controlled substance.

Authorities responded to Caccamo's home in the 4500 block of East Wonder Lake Road on July 5 where they found the 29-year-old man dead.

Investigators recovered multiple bags of heroin from Caccamo’s room. Some of the bags had an imprint of an orange basketball on them while other bags were stamped with the insignia of the Duke University “Blue Devil” basketball Mascot.

A search of Caccamo’s cell phone revealed Caccamo had been communicating with Shawn Brand, prosecutors said. Brand told authorities he delivered a bag of heroin with the “Blue Devil” logo on it to Caccamo, according to the news release. Brand said Caccamo bought the bags with the orange basketball logos from someone else.
