Spring Break Culinary Boot Camp

Lakeside Legacy Foundation is now taking registrations for
the Spring Break Kids/Teens Culinary Boot Camp. This course begins on Monday, March 26th and ends on Friday, March 30th. Participants will cook in the Donna and Joe Vestal Culinary Studio at Lakeside from 9am-1pm
and will enjoy their culinary creations for lunch. This boot camp also covers food identification, nutrition, sanitation, kitchen tools and safety, basic knife skills and preparing snacks and meals. This great stay-cation activity
was co-created by Crystal Lake 7th grader, Alex Schrempf. It is a class for kids and teens who want to learn how to cook! Space is limited and the cost of the camp is $185. The course covers recipes from many cultures include Mexican, Asian, Eastern European, Italian and American cuisines.

Alex, now 12 years old, got interested in cooking at the age of 6 or 7. He recalls, “I saw mom cooking and I always wanted to help!” He started out by boiling water, placing past noodles in water and stirring sauces. It progressed into sautéing vegetables and more complicated aspects of
putting together a meal. Now Alex can make an entire spaghetti meal by himself. He also enjoys making tuna salad, deviled eggs, macaroni and cheese and chicken
salad. Alex’s favorite food is Italian and he enjoys making pizza including homemade dough! If your children or teen love cooking, watch food network shows or want to learn more about making entire meals, sign them up for this hands on boot camp!

Alex came up with the idea of a spring break boot camp
because he has begun to become a great young chef and he wants to be able to pass on what he has learned to other kids. Alex will be teaching the class to fellow kids alongside Lakeside’s Chef Ingo Betz, and Alex’s parents will be assisting the instruction has Alex’s Sous Chefs. Alex co-designed the culinary class menus with his mom and Lakeside’s chef.  Students will cook and eat food from many different world cuisines. There will be an ingredient of the day that participants can taste and learn about. The daily ingredient will be used in the recipes. Students will also take home recipes to share with their families.
