Kraus Senior Center January Activities

The Cary Park District's Kraus Senior Center, 441 W. Main Street, offers a wide variety of low-cost programs, events, and trips for seniors.

The Cary Park District’s Kraus Senior Center, 441 W. Main Street, offers a wide variety of low-cost programs, events and trips for seniors. Senior Center hours are 8:30 am to 1:30 pm Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. For more information about the events and programs at the Senior Center call 847-639-8118. All programs take place at the Senior Center unless otherwise noted.

EVENTS AND PROGRAMS

Grand Victoria Casino in Elgin
Get out of the house and spend an afternoon gaming and enjoying lunch with friends on Thursday, January 16 from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm. Let us do the winter driving and drop you off at the casino door. Lunch is self-pay and on your own or you can meet up with a group for lunch. Fee includes transportation by Park District minibus. Gaming is self-pay. Registration deadline is January 9 and refunds will not be issued after the deadline. Cost is $10 for residents and $11 for non-residents.

The Wild Asparagus Experience
Join us for a one-of-a-kind experience that foodies will love on Thursday, January 23, from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm. The Wild Asparagus Catering of Barrington will give us a private, behind-the-scenes, dining experience. Executive Chef, Andrew Brennan, will provide a tour of the kitchen and demonstrate the preparation of a tasty treat. Participants will then enjoy a private, gourmet luncheon prepared by Chef Andrew. Fee includes transportation by Park District minibus which departs from the Community Center. Registration deadline is January 9 and refunds will not be issued after the deadline. Cost is $35 for residents and $38 for non-residents.

Let’s Go to the Movies!
Spend a winter afternoon with friends watching a movie at Regal Showplace Stadium 16 in Crystal Lake on Thursday, January 30, time to be announced. Fee includes transportation, movie ticket, small popcorn, small drink and a sweet treat. Transportation by Park District minibus departs from the Community Center. Registration deadline is January 23 and refunds will not be issued after the deadline. Cost is $20 for residents and $22 for non-residents.

Wii Bowling Tournament
Try a fun new twist on bowling – Wii bowling. Join your friends for a bowling tournament video game style on Friday, January 31, beginning at 10:00 am at the Senior Center. Snacks and cash prizes are provided. Rules posted at the Senior Center. Cost is $5 for residents and $6 for non-residents.

Lunch Out Group
Enjoy an afternoon of food and fellowship as the “Lunch Out Group” travels to Jameson’s Charhouse in Crystal Lake on Tuesday, January 28. Come alone or bring a friend. Lunch is off the menu and self-pay. Drive yourself, carpool or take the Park District minibus which departs from the Community Center at 11:15 am and returns at approximately 2:30 pm. Cost for minibus transportation is $5 for residents and $6 for non-residents. If you plan to drive yourself or carpool, please contact Missi Brezina at the Senior Center, 847-639-8118, at least one week in advance of the event date to be included in the total head count for the restaurant reservation. Advance registration is required to attend.

Chinese New Year
Let’s celebrate 2020, the year of the Metal Rat. Dine on a local restaurant’s in-house fried or white rice, a choice of sweet and sour chicken or broccoli beef with vegetables. Don’t forget the crab Rangoon, an egg roll and fortune cookie to make your dining experience complete. Pay to Play Bingo will follow lunch. Help us ring in the Chinese New Year on Friday, January 24 from 11:00 am – 1:30 pm at the Community Center. Cost is $11 for residents and $12 for non-residents. Registration deadline is January 17 and refunds will not be issued after the deadline.

Book Club
Thursday, January 9 from 10:00 – 11:00 am
This month the group will discuss “Me Before You,” by JoJo Moyes.

Bridge Club
Thursday evenings – January 2, 9, 16, and 23 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm

Canasta Club
Thursday, January 9 at 11:00 am and January 23 and 30 at 10:00 am. Please bring a snack to share.

Cary Canaries Glee Club
Tuesdays, January 14, 21 and 28 from 10:00 – 11:00 am

Chair Yoga
Wednesdays, January 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29 from 10:00 -11:00 am

Craft Club
Friday, January 31 from 10:00 – 11:00 am
Come join the Craft Club and spread some cheer by creating cards for soldiers deployed overseas and also to create small gifts for Memory Café participants that meet monthly at the Kraus Senior Center.

Crimson and Plum Divas
Monthly outings and activities arranged by club members. Contact the Senior Center for additional details.

Decoration Committee

Dominoes Club
Thursdays – January 2 and 16 from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
No experience is necessary; learn as you go. Bring a snack.

Lunch Bunch Crew
Tuesday, January 21 at 11:00 am. Bring your lunch and strike up a conversation with friends and local High School students. Share your wisdom, stories, and get to know the amazing youth in your community.

Mah Jongg Club
Tuesdays – January 7, 14, 21, and 28 at 11:45 am

Memory Cafe
Wednesday, January 22 from 10:00 – 11:00 am
This free program offers support to those with memory concerns and their caregivers. Activities and refreshments are provided.

Poker Club

Blood Pressure Checks
Friday, January 3 from 9:00 – 11:00 am
Receive a FREE blood pressure check provided by a registered nurse. No appointment necessary.

Souper Duper Friday
Friday, January 10 at 11:00 am
Enjoy a free bowl of soup and slice of bread served on a first come basis while the supply lasts.
