Man Strangled Woman While Infant Pinned Underneath: Authorities
Santos Vasquez Diaz, 36, faces several charges in connection with the Aug. 16 attack.

MCHENRY COUNTY, IL — A 36-year-old McHenry man faces aggravated domestic battery charges after authorities said he strangled a woman while an infant was pinned underneath her. Santos Vasquez Diaz, of the 4500 block of Garden Quarter Road, is charged with aggravated domestic battery, unlawful restraint, domestic battery, unlawful interfering with the reporting of domestic violence and endangering the life and health of a child in connection with the Aug. 16 attack.
On that day, Diaz is accused of pushing the woman onto a bed while she was holding the infant, causing the baby to be pinned between the bed and the woman as Diaz climbed on top of her. He placed his knees against her chest while strangling her and also pushed a car key into her throat, according to the criminal complaint.
During the attack, he took her phone from her, preventing her from calling for help, according to the criminal complaint.

The woman began to have trouble breathing and started to lose consciousness and was later treated at a hospital for pain, bruising and red marks. The condition of the infant was not immediately available.
Diaz's bail has been set at $100,000, and he is next expected in court on Sept. 3.
