McHenry Co. Man Gets Prison In Drug-Overdose Death

A Harvard man who pleaded guilty to delivering fentanyl-laced heroin to another man, causing his 2019 death, was sentenced to seven years in prison, prosecutors said.

Chano G. Sanchez, 36, of the 300 block of Church Street in Harvard, was indicted on three counts of drug-induced homicide and three counts of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance.

Sanchez delivered between one and 15 grams of fentanyl-laced heroin to Robert D. Gibson, 48, of Harvard, on March 6, 2019.

Gibson ingested a portion of the drugs which caused his death on March 7, 2019, court documents show.

Sanchez pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance following a plea deal with the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Prosecutors dropped all other charges as part of the deal and Judge Robert Wilbrandt sentenced the man on Thursday to seven years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Sanchez, who remains held in the McHenry County jail awaiting transfer to a state prison, also has to pay $2,415 in court fines and fees.

He will receive 300 days of credit for time served in the jail. A second suspect, Tina M. Shatters, 42, of Hebron, was also charged in the case.

She pleaded guilty in November 2019 to one count of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance and received 30 months of probation along with 180 days credit for time served in jail.

The case was investigated by Detective Verle Leard of the Harvard Police Department and prosecuted by Brian Miller of the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office.
