McHenry County Department of Health Closes Beach Due to Elevated Bacteria Levels

Wonder Center Beach has been closed. The beach will be re-sampled today.

The McHenry County Department of Health has closed Wonder Center Beach in Wonder Lake after water samples this past week showed elevated bacteria levels.

Beach water samplings were completed at 38 licensed beaches throughout the county on Wednesday, June 8, with follow up checks as needed on June 9.

Wonder Center Beach will be resampled on Friday, June 10. Residents can visit the MCDH website for the latest information on this and other McHenry County beaches.

To prevent illness associated with swimming, all licensed beaches on the 12 lakes in McHenry County are tested every two weeks for E. coli throughout the summer to determine water quality.

Water sampling results are reported to the appropriate beach authorities. MCDH will post an advisory or closed signage for beaches with elevated E. coli results.
