McHenry County is Only Collar County to Pick Donald Trump
The right-leaning county picked Trump and was the only county to do so in the collar counties.
McHenry County was the only county among suburban collar counties to pick Donald Trump for president on Tuesday.
With unofficial results in, nearly 50 percent of the county’s voters, which amounted to 71,117 people, selected president-elect Trump when they headed out to the polls on Tuesday while 42.04 percent -- or 59,827 people-- voted for democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. The rest of the voters, nearly 5 percent, picked libertarian candidate Gary Johnson and 1.49 percent selected Green party candidate Jill Stein, according to unofficial results posted on the McHenry County Clerk’s Office website.

McHenry County voters also did not pick Clinton as their Democratic choice for the presidential candidate during the March primary. Instead, over 60 percent of voters chose candidate Bernie Sanders and only 39 percent picked Clinton--even despite the fact that Clinton grew up in suburban Park Ridge. Trump was again McHenry County voters top pick for the Republican candidate during the primary with 40 percent voting in his favor.

Meanwhile, an overwhelming number of voters across the state of Illinois, and the rest of the Chicago suburbs, picked Clinton on Tuesday -- with 55 percent of total voters in Illinois selecting Clinton over the 39 percent who picked Trump. The win in Illinois gave her 20 electoral votes, but not enough as Trump would go on to win the electoral vote across the nation. He was declared president-elect early Wednesday.
McHenry County has traditionally voted for Republican candidates for president. Other than the 2008 election, when McHenry County voters selected current Barack Obama, a democrat, for president, McHenry County has voted for a Republican in every presidential election since 1948, according to the McHenry County Republican Party website.

Here is a look at how other suburban collar counties voted Tuesday, according to unofficial results posted on area county clerk websites:
Suburban Cook County
- Hillary Clinton: 679,297 votes, which was 65.38 percent of the vote
- Donald Trump: 312,177 votes, which was 30.05 percent of the vote
Kane County
- Hillary Clinton: 80,981 votes, which was 47.49 percent of the vote
- Donald Trump: 74,926 votes, which was 43.57 percent of the vote
DuPage County
- Hillary Clinton: 222,499, which was 52.77 percent of the vote
- Donald Trump: 164,355, which was 39.98 percent of the vote
Lake County
- Hillary Clinton: 168,186 votes, which was 57.29 percent of the total vote
- Donald Trump: 108,608 votes, which was 37 percent of the vote
Will County
- Hillary Clinton: 146,230 votes, which was 49.62 percent of the total vote
- Donald Trump: 129,726, which was 44.02 percent of the total vote
