Missing Man Found Dead Under Ice Identified

The body of the 50-year-old man was found in Wonder Lake on Saturday afternoon.

WONDER LAKE, IL — The McHenry County Coroner's Office has identified a 50-year-old man who was found dead under the ice in Wonder Lake over the weekend.

Emergency crews recovered the body of Michael Giba, of Wonder Lake, in Wonder Lake on Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

The Wonder Lake Fire Protection District was called to an area of the lake near the 5200 block of West Lake Shore Drive at about 3:45 p.m. to assist police with a missing person search, according to a news release from the fire protection district.

Rescue crews were called after a law enforcement drone spotted what appeared to be a body underneath the ice about 100 feet off shore, fire officials said. Crews used a specialized ice rescue craft to investigate, and firefighters in ice-rescue suits entered the water to remove the body.

No firefighters were injured during the recovery effort, according to the news release.

The coroner's office plans to complete on autopsy on Giba on Tuesday, and the incident remains under investigation.
