Mother, Son Become Trapped Inside Home Near Cary After Couch Catches Fire
Firefighters were able to safely guide the duo out of the basement. One was taken to the hospital.
Firefighters rescued a mother and her son who became trapped inside the basement of a home near Cary Monday morning after a couch in the two-story residence caught fire, fire officials said.
Both were evaluated at the scene by paramedics after firefighters were able to lead them out of the home and one person was taken to Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington.
Firefighters were called to the scene of the blaze at 1014 Spring Beach Way in unincorporated Cary at 5:51 a.m. When they arrived, firefighters found a heavy fire coming from the first floor of the home and a neighbor who was attempting to break out a basement window. The neighbor told firefighters that two residents were trapped in the basement, according to a press release.

Firefighters were able to find an exterior door to the basement, forced the door open and were able to find the residents and help lead them out of the basement safely, according to the news release.
The tenants of the home, Donna Carter and her adult son, Jonathon Carter, became trapped in the basement when the woke to the sound of their smoke alarms going off and found the living room couch on fire. They then went to the basement to rescue their family pets. As they tried to exit the basement, they realized they were unable to get out because a fire now blocked their exit, according to the news release.

A damage estimate was not available but the home was currently uninhabitable and the family is making arrangements to stay with relatives, fire officials said.
The fire does not appear suspicious in nature and remains under investigation. No firefighters were injured in the blaze.
