Police Identify Motorcyclist Killed in Sunday Night Crash
The crash occurred around 11:30 p.m. Sunday on South River Road at Black Partridge Road in unincorporated Nunda Township.

The crash victim has been identified as Merrick M. Gehrke, police said Monday. Gehrke was traveling south on River Road at Black Partridge Road at 11:33 p.m. when, for an unknown reason, his 2003 Harley Davidson XL883C left the west side of the roadway where it collided with a guardrail, according to a press release from the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.
Gehrke, who was not wearing a helmet, was ejected from his motorcycle. Gehrke, the sole occupant on the motorcycle, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the sheriff’s Office.
The cause of the crash has not yet been determined.
The investigation is ongoing by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Investigations Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office. Members of the McHenry Township Fire Protection District and A-TEC Ambulance also responded to the scene. The Island Lake Police Department assisted with traffic control.
The crash closed River Road between Charles J. Miller and McHenry Dam roads for five hours.
