Our Native Past is the second of a series of exhibits designed to introduce different aspects of local history and natural history for all audiences. Join us for discussion, activities co-hosted by the Nature Center and Colonel Palmer House.

On March 28, Sal Redhawk will present about local Native American tribes and customs. Sal Redhawk is a lifelong resident of Illinois, and is descended of the Zapatecan and Chichimecan. In 1976 he was a member of the Elgin Brigade Voyaguers. This group of young men re-enacting the fur trade canoed 28- to 34-foot Montreal canoes over Lake Superior, carrying cast iron gifts to Old Fort William, in Thunder Bay, Canada during the Bicentennial. He has been recognized by Ron Kelty, the director of the American Indian Center in Chicago as well as by Jim Thunder, tribal historian of the Forest Band Potowatomi. Redhawk has taught at numerous elementary schools, events at Joliet Junior College, Aurora University, various museums, libraries, park and forest preserve districts and historical societies throughout Illinois and Wisconsin. He has shared his learning with hundreds of thousands of people at re-enactments since 2000. He built a village in Yorkville, Illinois and taught over 7,000 students brought into the village for school day programming. Coordinating with Paul Bluestone, he also built the wigwam that can be seen at the Little Red Schoolhouse Nature Center in Willow Springs, IL. Redhawk continues his education by learning from the elders at White Earth Ojibwa and Mille Lacs Ojibwa Reservations in Minnesota as well as a Potowatomi elder in Wisconsin.
