Beginning in June of this year a new fitness facility will be opening in Crystal Lake. This facility is not a membership gym or a single private Personal Training facility. What it is, is a fully furnished 2,000 square foot training studio designed to bridge the gap for fitness professional who someday desire to have their own location. Most gyms require you to be an employee. They tell you that you can build your own business in that location, but they also tell you this is how much a session costs for the patron and this is how much you will be making. Usually you make 40-50 percent of the charged cost. At some gyms the cost for training can get expensive and out of the budget for people even though it may be a necessity to get started on a program to achieve results safely. I have seen ranges of $50.00-$85.00 per hour for single person appointments. Group sessions vary by location and cost is determined usually by number of participants. Now with that the professional may also be required to have other tasks and duties in which they may or may not be paid for. When all is said and done your at the mercy of the employer and your own business is really theirs. If in fact you have decided that your no longer interested in working there as a professional they may have had you sign a no compete clause or a proximity waiver stating that the clients whom you are serving and have served are not yours anymore and they belong to the facility. Then these people which you worked so hard with at creating positive results and a personal relationship with are left to be distributed to another professional. If your lucky you get to choose the new person who will work with you, but there will be wasted time as this person must take the time to know your fitness level and your history and limitations if they exist. You may then be asked to sign a new agreement for additional appointments to ensure this professional gets to see you. Another scenario in which I have seen is that you as a professional start going to various gyms and train your clients who want you to work with them as a guest member. Now your sneaking around to get the sessions in without raising suspicion that you are actually a professional and the facilities want their members working with only their employees. If you cant make that work you begin to start traveling from house to house training your clients at their homes. Here you have limited space and equipment but you make it work because your good at what you do, Home training is a great thing to do, the downfall of it is that all the running around can get old and also leave you with blocks of time without scheduled appointments. You may also visit other gyms and inquire if they have a training policy that allows independent contractors to come in and train. Some places have this and I have seen rates for facility use at 40-60%. I'm pretty sure they will ask you for a certificate of liability insurance with that facility listed as additionally insured and a National certification of training. If your a training professional you understand what I am writing. If you know a professional I'm confident they will tell you this is how it works. In my 30 years of coaching and training, managing and consulting I am grateful to say I have seen almost everything in this field as well as experienced most of what I am saying, This facility will have a high degree of integrity and professionalism.

You get to set your own pay scale, there is no competing for other professionals clients, there are no restrictions to the number of hours you can work. You choose who you want to work with, you choose how you want to market yourself, you choose the niche' you want to be known for, and you choose the income level you want to achieve. You will be an independent contactor and must have valid liability insurance and it is your responsibility to file income tax forms as required by law. What you will be now is your own business operating out of a facility that welcomes you to be successful. Speak to an accountant to determine what being a contractor looks like and the benefits you may have as a business owner.
