Sheriff says 23-year-old Woodstock man died when speeding truck slammed into trees in slick conditions near Crystal Lake (lakemchenryscanner.com) — Emergency crews responded early Sunday to a fatal single-vehicle crash on Butternut and Chestnut drives in unincorporated Crystal Lake, where a 23-year-old Woodstock man died at the scene. Investigators say his speeding Toyota Tacoma left the road and hit several trees, and they are examining speed, slick weather, and possible alcohol use as contributing factors.

Prairie Ridge's Tegan Vrbancic surpasses 1,000 career digs: Saturday's Northwest Herald roundup (shawlocal.com) — Crystal Lake athletes had a busy weekend, with Crystal Lake Central's volleyball team going 3-2 at the Richmond-Burton Tournament and its girls tennis squad staying undefeated by beating Crystal Lake South 5-2 at home. Crystal Lake South's boys soccer team also battled but fell 1-0 in a tight nonconference match at Chicago Taft.

(shawlocal.com) — Two Crystal Lake homes made McHenry County's top 10 most expensive recent sales, including a five-bedroom house on Acacia Drive that sold for $600,000 and a four-bedroom home on Kennsington Lane that sold for $480,000. The county saw 54 residential sales overall, offering a snapshot of current high-end housing prices and sizes nearby.
   

4. Meet Thomas Jefferson—Then Ask Him Anything! (shawlocal.com) — Crystal Lake's Raue Center for the Arts is hosting historian Clay Jenkinson on Saturday, October 17 at 1 p.m. for an interactive performance as Thomas Jefferson, complete with audience Q&A and a post-show discussion.
