Teen Died After ATV Landed on Top of Him: Coroner

An autopsy revealed the teen died of "compressional asphyxia" from an ATV that landed on his chest during the crash Sunday.

A teen from Crystal Lake died after an ATV landed on top of him during a crash Sunday night in Crystal Lake, authorities said Tuesday.

An autopsy Tuesay revealed the teen died from compressional asphyxia, which was described by McHenry County Coroner Anne Majewski as the “loss of oxygen from an inability to breath due to compression of the chest by the ATV found on top of the chest of the driver.” Police said the teen was from Crystal Lake but no further information is being released regarding his identity.

Emergency crews were called to the crash in the 2400 block of Bryn Mawr Lane at about 7:02 p.m. where they found the juvenile with multiple injuries, which he sustained as a result of the crash, according to a Crystal Lake Police Department press release.

The teen was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash is being investigated by the McHenry County Coroner’s Office and the Crystal Lake Police Department.
