WI Woman Faces DUI Charges In Fatal Crash

The McHenry County Sheriff's Office investigated the August collision that killed an Elmhurst woman .

MCHENRY COUNTY, IL — A Wisconsin woman faces aggravated drunken driving charges for causing a crash in McHenry County in August that killed an Elmhurst woman.

The McHenry County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest Monday of Alyssa Popp, 30, of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. Popp is charged with aggravated driving while under the influence of drugs, involving death; driving while under the influence; and improper lane usage.

The charges stem from an Aug. 7 crash in the 4300 block of Route 31 in unincorporated Ringwood. Police say a 2021 GMC Arcadia was heading north on Route 31 when it crossed the centerline and hit a 2015 Acura TLC head-on, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.

The driver of the Acura, Christina Smith, 56, of Elmhurst, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Popp was injured in the crash. She was first taken by ambulance to Northwestern Hospital in McHenry and then flown to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

Popp's bail has been set at $150,000, authorities said.
