Darien No Longer Has Lowest Virus Rate Among Towns Surveyed

City experiences 6 percent rise in coronavirus cases for the third week in a row.

DARIEN, IL — For the third week in a row, Darien saw a 6 percent rise in cases of those who have tested positive for the coronavirus, according to the DuPage County Health Department. Specific numbers of those who have recovered from the virus are unavailable.

For months, Darien had the lowest number of cases per capita among the nearby towns surveyed by Patch. But La Grange Park passed Darien in the last week, government figures show.

The number of local deaths from the coronavirus remained at seven, according to the health department.

In DuPage County, Addison has the highest number of cases with 1,271, which works out to 34.8 per thousand. It is followed by West Chicago, with 1,152 cases, or 43 per thousand. Despite the high caseloads, both towns have seen relatively few deaths — 10 in Addison and 13 in West Chicago.

Darien's rate of increase of 6 percent was higher than DuPage County as a whole, which saw its caseload rise by 5 percent in the last week. Darien makes up 2.3 percent of the county's population, but only 1.8 percent of the county's coronavirus caseload.

As of Sunday, Darien had 14.7 coronavirus cases per thousand people, better than most of its neighbors. The figure compares to 14 in La Grange Park, 17.4 in Western Springs, 18.5 in Clarendon Hills, 18.8 in Elmhurst, 18.9 in DuPage County, 22 in Hinsdale, 24 in suburban Cook County, 24.6 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands) and 25.5 in Burr Ridge.

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 287,930, up 5 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 8,601 state residents.

Nationally, 7.1 million people have caught the virus, up 5 percent from the week before. A total of 204,033 people have died from the virus in the United States.
