DARIEN, IL – Darien police said Tuesday they are awaiting word from prosecutors about whether a Darien domestic battery suspect will face another charge.

Stanley J. Kopka, 51, of Darien, was arrested on a domestic battery charge last month. He was taken to the DuPage County Jail.

When police released Kopka's name, Patch searched the internet and discovered he was a registered sex offender with an address in Harvard, a town in McHenry County.

Patch asked the police whether Kopka would face a charge of failing to register at his Darien address.

In an emailed response, Deputy Police Chief Jason Norton acknowledged Kopka was not registered in Darien and added, "I will have our detectives follow up on this to determine as to what took place."

Through a public records request, Patch obtained the police report on Kopka's arrest.

On the night of Oct. 10, police were called to Kopka's house. An officer was told a woman had locked herself in a bedroom.

Two other women told the officer that the woman in the bedroom said Kopka had struck her, according to the police report. She did not want the others to call 911 because she was afraid that would make things worse. The fiance of one of the women called.

The other women told police the victim was afraid Kopka would kill her, the report said.

The woman in the bedroom opened the door to the officer. She had a swollen right eye, a swollen lip and red marks on the side of her face and chin, according to the report. Her hair was disheveled.

The woman told police she got into an argument with Kopka. At first, she did not want to tell the officer what happened, but then admitted Kopka grabbed her face and "made physical contact," the report said. She declined to explain further.

Police said no weapons were in the house.

According to the state's sex offender website, Kopka was convicted of aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a 15-year-old in DeKalb County. He was 28 at the time.

In 2020, Kopka was listed as living in the 600 block of West 55th Street in Hinsdale.
