The Darien Rotary Club, serving Darien, Lemont, Burr Ridge and Willowbrook, is having a busy month. We’re collecting men’s coats for homeless veterans, packing food for 200 kids in our service area, and ending the month with an opportunity to find out more about our club. (That made me tired just writing it!) So let’s get started.

First, the various Rotary clubs in the Chicago area are working with the VA on a Homeless Veteran Stand-down day. This year’s event will be held on Friday November 15th, and it’s an opportunity for homeless veterans to connect with the VA to get services and support. Part of that support is picking up a new (to them) coat, and that’s where Rotary comes in. We need 900 men’s coats from size large and bigger. (The homeless tend to layer clothing in winter.) We sort these coats by size and help distribute them. If you have coats to donate, bring them to Lace School before November 8 and we’ll get them to the vets.

Second, on October 15th starting at 5:30 PM, we’re packing food for approximately 200 kids in our service area. We buy shelf-stable and kid-friendly food in bulk, unbox it, put it in one-kid one-weekend packets, and give to the schools to distribute to the children. We need volunteers – anybody is welcome and no RSVPs required. Just come ready to work! We’re done between 6:30 and 7. Bring your coats to the event to donate!

Finally, the Rotary is like the Marines – we’re always looking for a few good people! (Unlike the Marines, we have better haircuts.) On Tuesday October 29th we’re having an open house at the Edward Jones office owned by our member Dan Faretta. The event starts at 7 PM, and it’s an informal opportunity to meet the club and learn about what we do. We’re also looking for ideas on how we can better help the community. Come on down!
