Drive Will Donate Feminine Care Products to Homeless Shelters
Deerfield residents can participate in this national initiative from Aug. 18 until Sept. 30.

DEERFIELD, IL —The village will be collecting feminine hygiene products as part of a first-ever national campaign to help homeless women and girls.
The initiative, called Power to the Period, is a partnership between U by Kotex and DoSomething.org, a nonprofit group that encourages young people to create social change. It's goal is to collect and donate feminine care products to homeless shelters. The donation drive runs from Aug. 18 to Sept. 30.
“Women and children already facing difficult circumstances should not be burdened further by the lack of access to feminine hygiene products," Deerfield Mayor Harriet Rosenthal stated in press release about the initiative. "I would like to thank Dondee Ganev, a concerned Deerfield resident and mother, for bringing this national campaign to the Village’s attention. Ms. Ganev has inspired us to, once again, ‘Give Where YouLive’ and embody our community’s philanthropic spirit.”

According to a Harris Poll study done in June, 89 percent of Americans say access to feminine care products is a problem for the homeless. However, only 6 percent of those in the study say they actually donated these products to shelters.
Residents can drop off new, unopened boxes of feminine care products at Village Hall, 850 Waukegan Road, starting Thursday, Aug. 18, and running through Sept. 30. The donated products will be given to area homeless shelters, including The Lake County Haven, which empowers homeless women and their children to find permanent, independent living.
