Kates Road Bridge Reopens In Deerfield

The reconstruction of the bridge was completed Monday, just in time for Thanksgiving.

DEERFIELD, IL — Detour no more, as Kates Road Bridge in Deerfield has been reopened on schedule after nearly eight months of reconstruction work. The bridge had been closed to cars and other vehicles since village officials received the results of an inspection showing increasing cracks on its underside.

In March, the Village of Deerfield and the Illinois Department of Transportation jointly decided to shut down the bridge, which passes over railroad tracks to connect Waukegan and Pfingsten roads.

Construction was briefly halted in July when IDOT paused work on all projects due to the state budget crisis.

The project was approved by the village board in March and received federal funding to cover 80 percent its construction costs, while Deerfield covered the remaining 20 percent.

The public's patience during the project was appreciated, city officials said in an announcement of the reopening. Rejoicing residents of nearby homes held an impromptu ribbon-cutting ceremony.
