Murder Suspect Killed in Metra Train Shootout is Gurnee Man: POLICE

Illinois State Police released name of man killed in police shootout Friday evening aboard Metra train at Deerfield station.

DEERFIELD, IL -- Illinois State Police have released the name of the suspect in a south suburban homicide who was killed in a shootout with police aboard a Metra train in Deerfield late Friday evening. State police are investigating the police-involved shooting.

James Parks, 32, of Gurnee, was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital after being shot by police aboard a Metra Milwaukee District North Line train from Chicago to Fox Lake around 10:30 p.m. Friday. Parks is a suspect in a murder that had taken place in south suburban Evergreen Park the night before.

Officers with the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force were tracking Parks via his cell phone. When the train was stopped at the Lake Cook Road Metra station in Deerfield, task force officers asked for assistance from the Deerfield Police Department.

The state police said Parks became aware that he was being followed by the law. Officers positioned themselves both inside the train car and outside on the platform. Parks, said to be armed with a handgun, shot at several police officers aboard the train.

Police exchanged gunfire with the man, who was wounded in the shootout and died at the hospital. No officers or passengers were injured in the exchange of gunfire.

The man was a suspect in the shooting death of David Murrell, who was in a parked SUV in a Walgreens parking lot Thursday night when he was gunned down in Evergreen Park. Police in that suburb believe Murrell was targeted.
An autopsy is scheduled by the Lake County Coroner’s Office on Monday.
