West Nile Virus Found, Spraying Planned In Deerfield

DEERFIELD, IL — A mosquito sampled on the east side of Deerfield and southwest portion of Highland Park recently tested positive for West Nile virus, health officials announced. In response, the Southlake Mosquito Abatement District has planned to conduct out anti-mosquito spraying within village limits Thursday night.

So far in 2018, there have been three positive tests for West Nile among mosquitoes in the district, two in Deerfield and one in Highland Park.

The spraying starts around 10 p.m., weather permitting, in the areas indicated below:

The South Lake Mosquito Abatement District, which covers Deerfield, Bannockburn, Riverwoods, Highland Park and Highwood, operates without any facilities or staff by outsourcing all services through the contractor, Clarke, which the district describes as the foremost mosquito environmental management firm.

In Lake County overall, there has been one dead bird and four batches of mosquitoes that have tested positive for the West Nile virus as of Tuesday, according to the district. West Nile positive mosquitoes have been found in every municipality in the north suburban Cook County North Shore Mosquito Abatement District, and as of this week, state health officials confirmed two new human cases of the virus.
