Black Womanhood and Patriotism Focus of Oakton Lecture Sept. 17

Adults ages 55 and over are invited to a free lecture offered by the Passages Series in the Emeritus Program at Oakton Community College. “Black Womanhood and Patriotism: From Ida B. Wells to Michelle Obama” is scheduled 1-2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, at Oakton’s Skokie campus, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave.

Oakton hosts these high-quality Passages Series lectures for +55 adults that bring leading experts to discuss humanities-based topics such as history, music, film, biography and more. Lectures are developed for all intellectually curious adults who want to remain active, meet people and learn about topics of historical importance with echoes into the present day.

Presenter Michelle Duster, the great-granddaughter of Ida B. Wells, is a Chicago native and author or co-author of several books including “Ida in Her Own Words: The Timeless Writings of Ida B. Wells from 1893” and “Ida from Abroad: The Timeless Writing of Ida B. Wells from England in 1894.”

Duster has spent more than two decades teaching about the contributions of women and African-American. In her lecture, Duster will compare criticisms of black woman leaders today with the scrutiny her great-grandmother faced a century ago.

“I am excited that we are able to give the 55+ community a sneak peak into this series with the offering of a free lecture.” Jesse Ivory, Oakton senior manager for business and community programs, says.
