Car Burglar Throws Gun Over Fence During Arrest: Des Plaines PD

The 18-year-old was arrested and charged with felony counts of burglary to a motor vehicle and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

DES PLAINES, IL — A local teenager is accused of felony charges following two incidents of burglary to a motor vehicle and an aggravated unlawful use of a weapon charge. Kevin Antonio, 18, of Des Plaines, was taken into custody Friday in the 1700 block of Orchard Street.

Des Plaines police said the initial incident occurred on Feb. 2, when police responded to a report of a burglary to a motor vehicle in the 1600 block of White Street. A resident reported that her Lexus SUV had been tampered with between 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. She said that a purse, containing documents and an iPad, was stolen from her vehicle. A witness observed a person inside the car before walking eastbound.

Video surveillance from a nearby business showed a male matching the description provided by the witness leaving the area, who was later identified as Antonio.

At around 5 p.m. Friday, Des Plaines police responded to a call in the 1600 block of Orchard Street regarding a male matching Antonio's description pulling on car door handles. Officers arrived to find the rear window of an Infiniti SUV shattered and Antonio seated in the rear passenger seat.

According to police, Antonio complied with commands to exit the vehicle but then fled south on Orchard Street, despite officers instructing him to stop. He was apprehended shortly after.

During the arrest, Antonio reportedly reached into his waistband, removed a black object, and threw it over a nearby fence. Officers later recovered a black handgun from where the object was thrown.

Antonio was taken to the Des Plaines Police Station. The Cook County State’s Attorney's Office approved two felony counts of burglary to a motor vehicle, one felony count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and one misdemeanor count of resisting a peace officer.
