Russian teacher to lead Easter egg program at the Des Plaines History Center
"Easter Egg Traditions" set for Saturday, March 26, from 1-4 p.m., 781 Pearson Street.
The Des Plaines History Center’s annual family program, “Easter Egg Traditions,” will be held Saturday, March 26, from 1-4 p.m., 781 Pearson Street. Marina Orzhynska, who teaches Saturday school at Holy Virgin Protection Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Des Plaines, is thrilled to be invited back to the History Center to direct the session.
“We believe that the egg is a symbol of new life,” said Orzhynska, and she is happy to share her Eastertime joy with others. The program is designed for children, ages 5-12, with an adult. The fee is $3 per child for non-members, $2 for members. All families with schoolchildren are welcome to attend.
The History Center appreciates the opportunity to connect with the local Russian community for this event. “We are pleased to have Marina return for a second year to demonstrate and teach this interesting and colorful egg decorating tradition,” said Shari Caine, History Center executive director. “It’s a chance for families with young children to enjoy an afternoon together and create something beautiful to take home.”

Teaching comes naturally to Orzhynska. She enjoys spending time with children and said, “Ever since I was 5, I dreamed about teaching. Since I was in preschool, I told everyone that I would be a teacher.” She has always been impressed by her teachers, who she says were kind and smart.

Founded in 1967, it includes a Visitor Center and the Kinder House, an adjacent 1907 Queen Anne style house museum. With a vision to connect people with history, the History Center offers free tours of the Kinder House, research of Des Plaines, family and adults events, and a book discussion group.

The History Center is open Tuesdays-Fridays 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays 1-4 p.m. All programs and events are open to the public. A list of all the happenings can be found on the website.
