WESTMONT, IL — One person was in critical condition after a fire tore through part of a multi-unit building on Pier Drive in Westmont early Wednesday.

Fire crews got to the scene in the first block of Pier Drive just after 5:10 a.m. to find heavy smoke and fire coming from a unit on the building's first floor. After firefighters got into the unit, a resident was located near the front door and taken to a nearby hospital.

The flames were brought under control by 5:35 a.m. Smoke and water damaged two additional units and forced fire crews to create a hole in the building's roof to let out remaining smoke and gas.
