At the Illinois Drafting Educators Association (IDEA) regional drafting competition held at College of DuPage on March 4, 2011, five South High School students qualified to compete in the upcoming state competition, which will be held at Illinois State University on April 30, 2011. Overall, seven students placed first, second or third in three different drafting competitions.
The competition includes seven different divisions of events, representing various levels of CAD drafting techniques. For some of the timed competitions, students are required to complete typical floor plans and elevations as well as 3D virtual models of residential home plans.
“Our students excel at these competitions due in part to their tremendous level of attention to detail,” says South High School Architecture Teacher Mark Molinari. “In addition, students must be highly focused during the challenges, and it’s clear from their outstanding results that they’re able to do just that.”

- Architectural CAD 3D Design: First place, Dan Vurpillat; second place, Mike Rovella; third place, Cliff Dienberg.
- Architectural CAD 2D Design: First place, Adam Newton; second place, Andrea Fogarty; third place, Stephanie Skarin.
- Intro CAD: First place, Mike McAleer.
