Fall Home Maintenance: Get It Done Before It Gets Too Cold

Protect Your Envestment ! it's time to do some maintenance in and around the house to prepare for winter. Performing these chores will help keep your home looking and running efficiently.

Your fall maintenace checklist is below:

  1. Check all weather stripping and caulking around windows and doors. Replace
    or repair as needed.
  2. Check for cracks and holes in house siding; fill with caulking as necessary.

  3. Remove window air conditioners, or put weatherproof covers on them.
  4. Take down screens (if removable type). Clean and store.
  5. Check storm windows and doors; clean and repair as needed. Put back up (if
    removable type).
  6. Drain outside faucets and when possible, cover with any of the faucet
covers to protect from the freezing winds.
  7. Clean gutters and down-spouts to remove debris, and if possible, put up
gutter covers to prevent additional leaves and debris from getting in.
  8. Check roof for leaks; repair as necessary.
  9. Check flashing around vents, skylights, and chimneys for leaks and repair as
    necessary.
  10. Check chimney for damaged chimney caps and loose or missing mortar and
    repair as necessary.
  11. Check chimney flue; clean obstructions. Make sure damper closes tightly.
  12. Have furnace, hot water tank and fireplaces cleaned and serviced for optimum
use and safety for the winter months.

Enjoy the opportunity to be out in the fresh air. Have the entire family join
in the raking of leaves and the other yard chores. Then when all is done, pat
yourself on the back and relax with a cup of hot cider. There's nothing better
than the sense of accomplishment that only comes from a job well done!
