Lemon Tree Grocer - Why We Support Local
The Owners of Lemon Tree Grocer - Tim Canning and Shaun Black on the benefits of supporting locally sourced products and businesses.

Dear Neighbors,
For some, March is the start of the growing season in the Midwest. Farmers are preparing for spring weather and planting summer crops. Since Lemon Tree Grocer has opened its doors, our team has worked diligently to bring you the finest, freshest and healthiest produce, meat and seafood available. We often refer to “local”, “regional” and “sustainable” sources for our products. So what does this mean for you and what’s the benefit?
Locally sourced products are those grown and processed within a one hundred mile radius of the retail store that sells to the consumer. Regionally grown fruits, vegetables and meat are generally raised within a two hundred and fifty mile radius. Compared to large “factory farm” companies that offer the same type of product, but genetically they are fast growing, rugged, and can withstand long haul deliveries and an extended shelf life, often at the expense of nutrition and taste. Sustainable agriculture integrates three main goals--environmental health, economic profitability, and social and economic equity. A strong human component in this process allows for closer partnerships between grower, grocer and end user. While taste and freshness top the list of benefits, additional advantages of procuring locally grown food are economic and ecological.
