Cops See Increased Reports Of 'Grandparent Scam' In Downers Grove

Police say they have recently gotten several reports of scams in which the scammer pretends to be the victim's grandchild in need of money.

DOWNERS GROVE, IL — Downers Grove police are urging residents to stay vigilant after they say they have gotten several reports of residents being targeted in a "grandparent scam."

In the scam, the caller pretends to be the victim's grandchild and says they are in need of money. These scammers often say they need funds to get out of jail or some other crisis situation.

Downers Grove police shared a video with advice to help residents avoid being a victim of a grandparent scam. Below are some of the tips:

  • Ask the caller to verify personal information about your grandchild
  • Beware if the caller asks you to buy a prepaid debit card or gift card
  • Limit what information you give to the caller
  • Add more privacy settings to your social media accounts
  • Contact the family member the scammer claims to be
