District 58 Cancels Several Events Out Of 'Abundance Of Caution'
The school district canceled several events slated for March 12.
DOWNERS GROVE, IL — Downers Grove Grade School District 58 has canceled several events slated for March 12 out of an "abundance of caution" amid growing concerns over coronavirus throughout the state, Superintendent Dr. Kevin Russell wrote in an email. District officials held a phone call with DuPage County Health Department representatives and say they anticipate having to take more "proactive" measures.
The following activities that involve outside visitors have been canceled. Russell wrote that the performances will continue, but no outside visitors will be permitted to attend:
- Fairmount School musical at 2 p.m.
- Herrick Middle School Center Stage musical at 7:30 p.m.
Additionally, the following March 12 events have been canceled:

- Highland Geography Night at 6 p.m.
- Park District Basketball scheduled at several District 58 schools
- Cub Scouts meeting at Belle Aire
- Nomad Basketball and Rebels practices, scheduled at O’Neill
- Any other school activity or event that would bring groups of individuals who do not attend that school into the school building for the remainder of today.
After-school activities that involve District 58 students and no outside students should continue as planned. District officials recommend contacting your school's principal if you are unsure about a cancellation. The district said it will make efforts to reschedule the cancelled events.
