District 58 Shares Safety Message In Wake Of Deadly Texas Shooting

DOWNERS GROVE, IL — shared a heartfelt message with parents about school safety in the wake of the elementary shooting that killed 19 children and two teachers in Uvalde, Texas, Tuesday.

"Like so many of you, I am angry and sad that we are once again confronted with a terrible and senseless act of violence against children and school staff," Superintendent Dr. Kevin Russell wrote. "Our hearts are with the Robb Elementary School community in Uvalde, Texas."

Russell went on to mention the district's safety plan and its partnerships with the Downers Grove Police and Fire Departments. Some safety protocols include screening visitors and keeping doors locked.

"We regularly practice our safety procedures with students and staff through age-appropriate discussions and emergency exercises. While no amount of planning can guarantee that a tragedy such as this will not occur, we are doing everything possible to keep students and staff safe while at school," Russell wrote.

Russell concluded, "While events of this nature are incomprehensible and the connection to schools and the educational system bring the horror so deeply to light, we share with you our ongoing commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment for our District 58 learning community."
