District 99 To Evaluate Pedestrian Safety After Student's Death
Superintendent Thiele said the district will work to "to ensure we're doing all we can to keep students safe."

DOWNERS GROVE, IL -- In the wake of deadly crash that claimed the life of a Downers Grove North student, the school district says it plans to evaluate ways to ensure pedestrian safety near its schools. District 99 Superintendent Dr. Hank Thiele said in a letter to community members that "this tragedy has caused us, and many in the community, to raise concerns about the safety of the perimeter of not only North High, but of South High as well."
Preliminary investigations indicate that Downers Grove North junior Beth Dunlap was in a crosswalk on Main Street outside of the school and had a "walk" signal when she was fatally hit by a car heading southbound on Main in February 2019. Dunlap died Feb. 22, 2019 after her injuries were deemed "unrecoverable."
Thiele said district officials will assess the crosswalks "to ensure we’re doing all we can to keep students safe." Thiele said that ideas to improve pedestrian safety will be brought to the school board in the "weeks and months ahead."
