The Tiger’s Wife by Téa Obreht
Inspired by the author’s experience growing up in Yugoslavia during the civil unrest of the 1990s, The Tiger’s Wife tells the story of Natalia, a pediatrician living in an unnamed country torn apart by ethnic and political strife. While traveling to a remote Balkan village, Natalia learns her grandfather, with whom she was very close, has died. Mysteriously, he had wandered off to a distant village, leaving no explanation. Natalia believes that two legends her grandfather told her when she was a child, one of a tiger escaped from the zoo and one of a “deathless” man, might hold the key to unlock the mystery of his last days.
