#GivingTuesday - Tonight, everyone sleeps in a bed of their own

Tonight, everyone eats at a table and sleeps in a bed.

What is Giving Tuesday? #GivingTuesday is a global holiday that celebrates the kindness and generosity of the holiday season by giving to nonprofit organizations all around the world. Similar to Black Friday and Cyber Monday that kick off the holiday buying season, #GivingTuesday helps kick off the giving season but with a focus on the true meaning of what this time of year is all about.

Sharing Connections, in Downers Grove, serves people facing crisis, furnishing hope for more than 119,558 individuals since 1986.

"Our goal for #GivingTuesday is to fund 33 beds in celebration of 33 years of Sharing Connections. Last year we served almost 10,000 local individuals including 3,687 children!" said Beth Carey, Director of Development. "It's a team effort, we couldn't do it without the many hours our dedicated volunteers put in, the in-kind items from our furniture donors and the many partnerships that help fund our mission. It warms my heart to know that so many people are working together to help our neighbors in need."

Sharing Connections was named Chamber 630's "Inspirational not-for-profit of 2019" for the good work they do.

Facebook is waiving fees and matching dollar for dollar on a first-come, first-served basis until $7,000,000 in donations are made on Facebook. It begins at 7 am on Tuesday, December 3, 2019. Sharing Connections will be hosting their #GivingTuesday campaign on Facebook starting Monday, December 2, 2019. Beds are $200 each. Your contribution will make an impact, whether you donate $5 or $500.

Other ways to spread cheer to local neighbors in need with Sharing Connections:

• It's a Wonderful Life - Tivoli Theater December 14 & 15 [often sells out]. $5 movie tickets and raffle onsite - all proceeds go to Sharing Connections.

• Du page Toy Program- Host a toy collection box or donate new toys, gift cards, hats, gloves and coats for Sharing Connections that will be distributed to local families living at or below the poverty line for the holidays.

• Give the gift of a good night sleep -For every $200 donation to our bed fund, we are able to provide a brand new twin set for a child or, with a $150 donation a new crib and crib mattress. A clean safe place to sleep for many years to come and a great start for the journey ahead…

• Volunteer with us...individuals, groups and teams of all types are welcome. Flexible, fun and meaningful opportunities. Reception work, sorting items, unloading mattresses, events, driving the box truck for furniture donations, helping clients and more. Give an hour or come every week, we are happy to welcome you to the Sharing Connections family!

• Become a Corporate Sponsor and spread kindness all year long!

Sharing Connections, located in Downers Grove, brings together community members by enabling families and businesses to share their gently used furniture, household items and clothing with families needing assistance. This is a unique opportunity for the community to directly make an impact by passing on something they no longer need to make a difference in the life of a family.

Sharing Connections staff works closely with referring partner organizations such as domestic violence shelters, housing organizations, food pantries, schools, veterans, and teen parent organizations refer clients to Sharing Connections after they have determined the need for beds, cribs, furniture and other household items. Fitting with the vision of Sharing Connections, distribution of cribs and beds for children is a major focus of our programming.
