Growing up in the 1960'on the southside of Chicago, my favorite meal was a hamburger and chocolate shake, but my mom created a wonderful sloppy joe. A combination of ground beef and onions with a great tomato sauce served on a bun.
But when Manwich was produced, that was it for me as a Downer's Grove mom in the 1990's.
There are several suggestions on how the sandwich was created. According to sources, Marilyn Brown, director of the consumer test kitchen at H.J. Heinz in Pittsburgh, says their research at the Carnegie Library suggests that the sloppy joe's origins lie with the "loose meat sandwiches" sold in Sioux City, Iowa, in the 1930s and were the creation of a cook named Joe.

Manwich was introduced in 1969 which is a seasoned tomato-based sauce that all you need to add is browned ground meat and place the mixture on a bun for an easy meal. Later in 1977, due to its popularity, Manwich added a family-sized can of its sauce to the markets.
Manwich offers a variety of recipes such as a vegetarian sloppy joe.
