Gun Seized During Traffic Stop In Downers Grove

Police say they found cannabis and a loaded gun inside a car during a traffic stop near Jewel-Osco at 63rd and Main Streets.

DOWNERS GROVE, IL —Police say they seized a gun from a driver who did not have a valid conceal and carry license during a traffic stop at 63rd and Main Streets just after 8 p.m. Nov. 1.

The driver of a Jeep Patriot was heading east on 63rd Street from Dunham Road when they were pulled into the parking lot of Jewel-Osco, 6215 Main St., for an expired license plate, according to the crime blotter.

The responding officer reported smelling cannabis coming from the car and saw cannabis shavings on the front passenger seat, the blotter said. Police searched the car for narcotics and reported finding a Stoeger STR-9 semi-automatic pistol with a round in the chamber and seven rounds in its magazine.

A glass container that contained what was suspected to be cannabis was also found, per the blotter. Police say the driver had a valid Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) Card, but did not possess a valid conceal and carry license.

They were taken to the Downers Grove Police Department and later released on bond.
