DOWNERS GROVE, IL — A Chicago man was sentenced to 40 years in prison Friday for carjacking a pregnant woman in Downers Grove in 2019.

Daysean Washington-Davis, 22, had been out on bond for a charge of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon when the incident took place, according to DuPage County State's Attorney's Office. On April 25, 2022, he pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicle hijacking with a firearm.

Emanuel Embry, 22, of Chicago, a codefendant in the case, pleaded guilty to the same count and is set to appear in court on Oct. 20. A third person, initially charged as a juvenile in the case, Martavious Robinson, was transferred to adult court and his case is pending.

Police say that on Dec. 13, 2019, a pregnant woman was sitting in her car in her driveway on Hawkins Street when Embry and Robinson approached wearing masks and carrying guns. The pair is accused of telling the woman to get out of her car and then getting in and driving off.

According to police, Washington-Davis initially drove Embry and Robinson to the woman's home.

A friend who witnessed the incident followed the victim's stolen car and approached it when it was stuck in traffic. Police say Embry and Robinson left the car and fled on foot, and then Washington Davis got into the victim's friend's car and drove off.

Robinson was taken into custody later that day. Washington-Davis and Embry were taken into custody in Chicago on Dec. 17.

Police say a subsequent investigation revealed that Washington-Davis, Embry and Robinson were involved in two prior vehicle hijacking incidents in Downers Grove and Warrenville.

“In late 2019, Mr. Washington-Davis, Mr. Embry and allegedly Mr. Robinson, terrorized
DuPage County residents stealing three vehicles at gunpoint in two-weeks’
time,” DuPage County State's Attrorney Robert Berlin said in a news release.

Berlin added, “Violent crimes such as these have an incredibly crippling effect on not just the immediate victims, but the entire community as well leaving residents to fear for their personal safety."
