DOWNERS GROVE, IL — An Oak Park man is being held on $1 million bond after police say he fired a gun into a car with a woman inside. The incident took place in June in Downers Grove.
Douglas Thigpen, 36, of Oak Park, was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm directed at a person or occupied vehicle in connection with the incident.
Police were called to the 5700 block of Walnut Avenue just after 5:45 a.m. on June 9 for a report that shots had been fired.According to prosecutors, Thigpen and the woman were in a verbal argument when Thigpen got into his car and fled the scene.
Police say the woman followed Thigpen in her car.
Thigpen is accused of getting out of his car and using a Beretta 9mm handgun to fire four gunshots into the woman's vehicle before fleeing the scene.
“Discharging a firearm, particularly at an occupied vehicle in a residential area, as alleged against Mr. Thigpen will not be tolerated in DuPage County and will be met with the full force and effect of the law,” DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin shared in a statement.
He added, “Thankfully, no one was injured as a result of Mr. Thigpen’s alleged actions. I commend the Downers Grove Police Department for their outstanding work in the identification and apprehension of the defendant in this case."
