Men Urged to Make Health a Priority

June is National Men's Health month and a perfect time to remind the men in your life to get the checkups and screenings they need.

Did you know that women are three times more likely than men to visit the doctor for annual exams and preventative services? June is National Men’s Health month and a perfect time to remind the men in your life to get the healthcare checkups and screenings they need to live long and happy lives.

Steps men can take to safeguard their health include making prevention a priority, eating a healthy diet, and adding additional movement and exercise to their daily lives. In addition, men should:

  • Quit smoking
  • Limit alcohol to no more than 2 drinks per day
  • Manage stress
  • Use sunscreen
  • Schedule an annual wellness visit with a physician

Men are also advised to avoid being a “weekend warrior” where they only work out, do sports, or strenuous work in the yard or at home on the weekend. Men should engage in exercise during the week including flexibility, cardio, and resistance or strength training on a regular basis.

The healthcare team at the Midwestern University clinics also advise men to take care of the “little things” before they become “big things.” For example, if your knee hurts, go to a physical therapist to see if they can help you take care of the issue before surgery is required.
